May your new year be happy in all kinds of ways and all your tomorrows be wonderful days!

Joy Young Restaurant - Petersburg VA - 1950s

The Joy Young restaurant was on Route 301 just outside of Petersburg. It was Grandpa's second favorite place to eat when he was visiting us ... his #1 favorite was King's BBQ.  Joy Young closed some time ago and the building was vacant for ages before being demolished.  There's just an empty lot there now.

The description on the back of the postcard reads:

Air-Conditioned
Delicious Chinese and American Foods
Steaks - Lobster - Seafood
Plenty of Parking Space

Dad's Christmas Santa Carvings in My Kitchen Window - 2014

Dad carved these in the early 1990s and gave them to me over a period of 2 or 3 years.  I put them in the  kitchen window each December and they really brighten the window sill which usually has plants the other 11 months of the year.  The photo was taken on an overcast day and the lighting doesn't do their cheerfulness any justice!

There's also 2 spoons he carved with snowmen handles that are propped up in the lower left hand side of the photo.

A Joyful Christmas - 1911

My great-grandmother Sibyl used to correspond with her sister-in-law Rosie in Danville via letters and postcards.  When my grandmother was a year old in 1911, Sibyl sent this postcard to Rosie but wrote it as though it were from my grandmother to her cousin Coy (also a year old).  It's postmarked from Washington D.C. on December 23, 1911 at 10:00 AM.  She writes on the back:

"Dear Coy,

Your card came today.  I went downtown with my mama today.  Santa said he was going to send you something from Washington.  My daddy has got a bad cold.  Love to Aunt Lizzie and Grandma and you.

Love,

Virginia"

Among many other items, this postcard was saved by Rosie and given to my grandmother as a keepsake of her mother.

Heartiest good wishes for a Merry Christmas - late 1970s/early 1980s

Mildred sent this lovely Christmas postcard and wrote on the back:

"Dear Shelby, Just a note with this card.  Thank you so much for the birthday card and for telling Katherine it was my birthday.  You and she have got to be just the sweetest girls around.  You made an old woman quite happy.  Thanks a lot.  Love always, Mildred"
