Grandma Letter ~~ Postmarked August 31, 1988
She wrote:
Dear Shelby,
Received your nice letter & enclosures. I'm glad you liked the picture. It was mind-boggling at times.
Yes, very cool here. It was only 71 yesterday. The Fair started yesterday. It is only 2 blocks away. Did I tell you Ruth asked me to go along to see the Judds tomorrow night? She has 2 grandstand tickets.
I didn't se "Psycho" until a few years ago. Yes, it was good.
I will send you the recipe for the apple tart as soon as I find good apples to make one. I never wrote it down & I just put it together without really measuring any thing. I couldn't find good juicy cooking apples. When I make it, I will measure everything & send it to you. I just put about 1/4 cup of flour & 1/4 cup of sugar on the bottom of an uncooked pie shell. Peel & slice apples & layer in pan. Sprinkle brown sugar over the top & dot with butter. Pour about 1/4 cup walnuts into the pie along the sides so as not to get the brown sugar dissolved. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Cook at about 425 for about 10 minutes & turn to 325 or 350. If it gets too brown cover it with a piece of foil. After 1/2 hour test to see if the apples are tender. The foil keeps the crust from getting too done & burnt.
I hope this doesn't confuse you because it really is very simple. I will make one & measure everything very soon. I love them especially with ice cream or milk over it. Or just plain.
Write soon.
Love always,
Grandma
Love to Jack!
