Grandma Letter ~~ July 1990

Grandma wrote:

Dear Shelby,

Thanks for the nice letter.  I delayed in answering because I was going to Atlantic City & would have more news.

Yes, I found a bag at Hess's but it really wasn't what I wanted but it will do.

No, I haven't made any rice pudding for a while.  I started to make some about a week ago because Ruth brought me an extra 1/2 gallon of milk.  She gets two 1/2 gallons delivered every Friday morning & she had excess.  I had just bought 1/2 gallon but I didn't get around to making the rice pudding.

I hope you get the music box on time.

Yes, I'm ready for Fall TV.  It stinks at this time.  I fall back on the National Geographic programs.  I enjoy them.

I suppose you received my card from Atlantic City.  Well, I really enjoyed it.  Our tickets cost $19.50 & they give you three slips - one for $10 in quarters when you get into the casino, & one for $2.50 toward a meal.  The other is a $5 deferred slip that you can use when you go the next time.

I used the $10 and won about $20 - but I put it all back in.  I didn't use any of my own money.

We walked up to the "Taj" & it is really something to see.  The carpets are royal purple & some have designs in them.  The girls that carry around the drinks (for anyone who is playing and wants one, free of charge, of course) -- they are dressed in skimpy costumes & have a hat on like a fez only it has plumes on top.  The chandeliers are gorgeous.  It is about a mile up the boardwalk from Trump Plaza where we were.  The weather was cloudy & windy. I was so tired yesterday.  My legs weren't used to that much exercise.  We ate in the Broadway Deli - one of the many dining areas in the casino.  It was cafeteria style.  My main course was pepper steak.  I had a cannolli & an Italian ice for dessert.  It was $8.50 plus the $2.50 slip.  Everywhere you looked it was just mind boggling.  It was so beautiful.  You sure see some sights walking along the boardwalk.  We saw lots of deer along the Atlantic City expressway.  They didn't seem to be afraid.  We left here at 8:25 AM & returned at 7:30 PM.  The bus left Atlantic City at 5:00 PM.

Well hon, I guess I've run out of steam for this time so let me hear from you when you have time.

I'm sending you a newspaper picture of the crowd at the stadium on the 4th for the fireworks.  Ruth, Harold and I sat out front  of our building & watched.

Take care.

Love always,

Grandma

This hotel is nice - ice skating & all.  Our room has stove, fridge & sink.  We ate Maryland crab cakes last night.  They were delicious.  They have a "kiosk" lounge here.  Will write more later.  Love, Grandma

Grandma Letter ~~ Postmarked July 3, 1991

She wrote:

Dear Shelby,

Glad to hear from you.  Your Mom & Dad came up as you know & I enjoyed their visit.

It is rainy & cool here, very overcast.

I took the bandage off my face Tuesday (last week) & it is still touchy but is fine.

Yes, I had a nice time at Donna's.  Her food is always good.

No, the nurse came 3 times a week for 2 months.

I went to Dr. Shore today.  They are in the process of moving to an office near the hospital.  He changed my medicine around - nothing new - just cut some of it down a bit & gave me a month's supply of nitro glycerin patches.  I put one on my chest every morning & take it off at night.  It is some kind of medicine that goes in thru the skin.  I asked him if he thought I was doing okay & he said I was.  Of course, I didn't expect him to say anything else.  I have lost so much weight.  I told him I get tired when I walk & my legs don't want to go where I want them to.  I haven't much stamina.

I don't know what the little Shelby's middle name is but I'll ask Donna.

Let me know about your new Rose of Sharon.

They are having fireworks Thursday up at the stadium (the city sponsors it).  We sit out front.  They are something to see.  It is just 1/2 block away.  The streets & park are jammed.

Well hon, I better close so write when you can.  Have a good holiday.  Take care.

Love Always,

Grandma

P.S.  Love to Jack!
