So True!

Apples so red hang overhead
and nuts, ripe-brown, come showering down
in the bountiful days of September!

A belated graduation wish

This belated graduation card sent by a family friend definitely has a more autumn feel to it rather than the usual spring/summer theme of most graduation cards.  It's a very pretty scene!

Slow and steady does the trick ...

This is a get well card sent to me in the early 1970s by my math teacher at the time.  I hated math but I still love turtles ... especially psychedelic ones!!

United Kingdom, World Showcase

I think my mother brought this postcard back from a visit to Epcot Center in the early 1980s.  Looks like fun!

For you, daughter on your birthday

This very pretty and very cheerful birthday card was sent to me in 1981 by my parents.  I would have been in summer session in college and if I were lucky, the card would have had cash enclosed with it!!

Dad - early 1960s

I enjoyed seeing this old snapshot not just because my father is in it but it's been fun to take a look at the kitchen of my childhood again!  I see cookies cooling on the baking sheet on the oven top, the electric frying pan that my mother used to cook in back then ... I wonder how many of those are still around?  She used to bake swiss steak in it quite often ... I can almost smell and taste the steak bubbling in the tomato sauce.  Yum!  The electric frying pan is empty in the picture and I'm not sure if my father is preparing some ingredient for it or what.

Peanut Butter-Date Cookies

For a sweet girl at graduation

This high school graduation card was sent by an uncle & aunt that live in Virginia Beach.  They note inside "Hope to see you this summer."  ... You bet!  This is the 3rd graduation card I've noticed since putting the blog together that has daisies on it.

So True!

A road like brown ribbon, a sky that is blue,
A forest of green, with the sky peeping through,
Asters, deep purple, a grasshopper's call,
Today it is summer, tomorrow is fall.

I'm Bert! Which Sesame Street character are you?

You Are Bert

Extremely serious and a little eccentric, people find you lovable - even if you don't love them!

You are usually feeling: Logical - you rarely let your emotions rule you

You are famous for: Being smart, a total neat freak, and maybe just a little evil

How you life your life: With passion, even if your odd passions (like bottle caps and pigeons) are baffling to others

November - 2001

I'm wishin', wishin', wishin' ...

My grandmother sent this adorable card in the early 1970s.  I wish I had kept the envelopes to these cards but at the time it never dawned on me to do that.  Think back to the early 1970s and imagine if someone had told you about the internet to come ... it would have seemed like science fiction to me!

My grandmother writes "I hear through the grapevine that you are sitting up & have your stitches out - wonderful!  Wonderful!!  You will make it yet kiddo!  Just think, you will soon be going home so make every effort to help your self.  Keep your chin up. Be good.  Love, Grandma"

At this happy time of your graduation

This card was sent to me in 1978 by "Helen & Emery" and I racked my brain this morning but could not remember them ... how awful!!  I had to email my mother to see if she could remember them and she informed me that Emery worked with my father for years.  She couldn't remember their last name at first but emailed me after an hour to fill me in after she finally remembered it.  THEN I remembered ... my father always called him by his last name, never by Emery so that explains my memory loss.

This card folds out into 3 sections and is made by "Drawing Board Greeting Card Co".  I'm not familiar with them so I did a quick search online and it seems they were acquired by American Greetings at some point and later became Carlton Cards.

So True!

Happiness always looks small while you hold it in your hands, but let it go and you learn at once how big and precious it is.

Happiness Is ...

This very cute and cheerful get well card was sent by some friends of my grandmother in the early 1970s.  I love the bright and mirthful faces of the flowers!

The Sky Inspiration Test

Beginnings Inspire You

You are independent and original. You are highly inventive and creative.

You love undertaking new and interesting projects. You have lots of ideas.

You have a delightful and colorful inner world. People would be stunned if they could see inside your head.

You aren't afraid of failure. Tomorrow is always another beginning.

Memorial Stadium, Baltimore

My father took me to a Baltimore Orioles baseball game in either 1969 or 1970, I can't remember the exact year!  Despite his best efforts, I never turned into an avid baseball fan but I did enjoy going to that particular game.  I can't even remember who they played against but I don't think it mattered ... just being at the stadium and being part of the excitement was enough.  The stadium no longer stands, having been demolished in 2002.  Here's an interesting history ~~~~~> http://www.ballparks.com/baseball/american/memori.htm

Coconut Thumbprint Cookies

Happy Birthday Thoughts

I love this birthday card from Grandpa & Mildred sent in the 1960s!  It reminds me somewhat of the artwork you see on older postcards from the late 1800s & early 1900s.  The pretty drawing is set off by a profusion of glitter making it all sparkly and cheerful!

The Colonel - 1995

"If" for girls

My grandmother gave me this card when I graduated from college and dated it May 15, 1982.  There's a poem inside by Gale Baker Stanton called "If" that you can read here ~~~~~> http://therosarytrail.com/have-you-ever-read-this-poem/

What Peanuts Character Are You?

You Are Linus

You are an optimistic and open minded person. You believe that everything will work out in the end.

You are very kind and forgiving. You're always willing to give someone another chance.

You are highly creative and innovative. People sometimes just don't get what you're doing.

You are brainier and smarter than people realize. You are always thinking, plotting, or dreaming.

Roscoe - 1995

Roscoe was a brown husky mix that we adopted in the 1980s from the Richmond SPCA.  He was about a year old at the time and his previous owners had taken him to the shelter because he chased the neighbor's ducks.  He was a very nice dog and we had him for about 10 years before he passed away suddenly of a heart attack while playing in the backyard.  He would have loved living here with us but died while the house was being built and never made it out here.  I think my favorite memory of him was his getting out of the fence one winters day when we were at work and a neighbor boy took him home with him.  When we went to pick him up, he was curled up on the couch by the woodstove watching tv with his new friend and seemed reluctant to come home!!  Well, who could blame him!

The Colonel - 2000

Count me in with all the rest ...

This get well card came to me in the early 1970s from my grandmother's friends Ruth & Harold.  Being an animal lover, I loved it!  The skunk on the right reminds me a little bit of Pepe LePew!

Birthday Express

This adorable fold-out train card was given to me by a neighborhood friend that I used to play with.  She was about 2 years older which is a lot when you're 5 or 6 years old ... and I was sooooo impressed that she had the entire collection of Dr. Seuss books ... they were lined up on a bookshelf in her bedroom.  Okay, maybe I was easily impressed but come on ... they were books ... AND Dr. Seuss ...

If the idea has ever crossed your mind ...

This tri-fold get well card was sent by my grandmother in the early 1970s. An oldie but a goodie!  She signed it "Love to my honey, Grandma"

I tried rotating it but can't seem to get it right so just tilt your head to the left for the full effect!  :)

What color crayon are you? Take the quiz!

You Are a Yellow Crayon

Your world is colored with happy, warm, fun colors.

You have a thoughtful and wise way about you. Some people might even consider you a genius.

Charming and eloquent, you are able to get people to do things your way.

While you seem spontaneous and free wheeling, you are calculating to the extreme.

Your color wheel opposite is purple. You both are charismatic leaders, but purple people act like you have no depth.

A message for the graduate

The design on this card is simple but it's a good message.  I received this card in 1978 for high school graduation and it's from friends of my grandmother.  I never met them but she spoke fondly of them and they always sent cards on special occasions.

Great Car

We were at a Valero gas station in Dinwiddie County a few days ago and this snazzy little car pulled into the parking lot.  I love seeing one of a kind vehicles and this one was great!

For a sweet girl who's 5

This American Greetings card opens to a spray of flowers popping up ... sweet!  It was given to me in 1965 by 3 sisters that lived next door to us for a while.

Serious Humidity

It has been extremely humid here this summer and about 2 weeks ago I took this photo around 10:00 AM.  It was foggy with temps in the 100Fs ... yuck!

To a sweet little granddaughter

What a girly-girl card!  This very glossy fold out card was sent by my grandmother in the 1960s.

Summer early 1960s

I'm not sure if I'm holding something for the camera or just holding my hands!

She sells seashells down by the seashore

Another seasonal Mary Engelbreit print!

A Cheery Note

This sweet get well card was sent in the early 1970s by Ruth & Harold who were friends of my grandmother.  I think for years I never even knew they had a last name ... it was always just "Ruth & Harold"!  Like my grandmother, they have both since passed away but I still have my card with glitter!
