Harborplace and Hyatt Regency Hotel ~~ Baltimore, Maryland ~~ 1983

Mom sent this postcard to Grandma when she & Dad visited the Harbor for a long weekend.  She wrote:

"We came up for the weekend.  Sure am enjoying it.  So much to see and do, not to mention eat! You  must try to get a trip down, you'll love it.  Will write later.  Love, Joan"

Special Delivery Stamp ~~ 1957

From MysticStamp.com ~~~~~>  "Special Delivery stamps were pre-payments added to the regular “lawful postage” for an extra service – immediate delivery of a letter within one mile of any special delivery post office.  These special post offices were those with free routine delivery service or in larger communities with 4,000 or more people.

First available in 1885, the Special Delivery service was extremely popular.  At first, the service was available from 7 a.m. to midnight.  The following year, the hours changed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  The service was so successful that in 1886, every U.S. post office began to offer Special Delivery."

Grandma Letter & Enclosed Family Circle Cartoon ~~ April 1995

She wrote:

Dear Shelby,

Received  your cute card yesterday.

I went to Donna's for Easter.  She doesn't look good.  She made me an Easter basket.

I'm still watching that little duck on her nest. She is always there.  I don't know when she eats.

Ruth will be going to Oklahoma in a few weeks.

That picture of the man holding the baby says it all.  It is inconceivable that someone could do such a thing.  There are a lot of monsters in the world today.

Did I tell you I made a pillow top for Becky?  It is the ring bearer's pillow.  I cross stitched it and Becky will make it (the pillow).  I had to figure out how to make the names and date in it.  It was a circle of flowers & the names went in the middle and then little pearl beads in the flowers.  She is coming over tonight to get it.  It is lovely.

I must get going. I want to make some broccoli soup for lunch.  Write soon & love to you & Jack.

Love Always,

Grandma

P.S.  Thank you for the lovely Easter card.

The photo that she referenced was this one taken in the aftermath of the Oklahoma Bombing.  I wonder what she would make of events going on in today's world?

General Information Memo for Parents ~~ Walnut Hill Elementary School ~~ June 1968

This mimeographed note was sent home with all students on the last day of school in June 1968.  It's somewhat faded & hard to read but there are four items for the parents in reference to the beginning of school the following September.

1).  School opens again on Wednesday, September 4, 1968.

2) Watch the local newspapers the last part of August or first week in September for bus schedules affecting your child.

3)  If nothing prevents, the principal will send out a note on September 4th,concerning proper clothing for our pupils for the new school year.  We have had some problems concerning improper dress for the past few weeks.  Some P.T.A. parents and teachers will be called in during the summer for a discussion about this item.

4)  The faculty and staff of this school hopes that you and your family will have a pleasant, salubrious summer.
