So True!

No cowboy was ever faster on the draw than a grandparent pulling a baby picture out of a wallet.

Something for Baby's Shower

This tiny gift card was given to my mother at her baby shower at the end of June 1960 and signed by "Hazel".  The name alone dates the card somewhat.  I love the name Hazel!  This little American greetings gift card was purchased for 5 cents.

Tombstone, Arizona

This postcard was sent by my mother on one of their trips west.  Postmarked at Willcox, AZ on October 1st, 1982, the photo is of the Boothill Graveyard in Tombstone, Arizona.  My mother writes "We went to Tombstone today.  Heading for El Paso tomorrow.  The weather is nice but very windy.  We picked olives from a tree in a shopping center in Tucson.  See you soon."

Thinking of you

This graduation card was given to me by our next door neighbors when I graduated from high school in 1978 and I remember that they also gave me a gift of perfume ... a bottle of "Charlie".  That perfume was all the rage back then ... it was a must!  Until I did a search online, I didn't even realize it was still being sold!

Another popular one for young adults then was "Love's Baby Soft" ... remember that one?

Sand Tarts

All things come to those who wait ...

This sweet card was sent in the 1960s from Uncle Paul & Aunt Marion and was a little belated according to the card although I don't remember it myself!  I'm sure I was just thrilled to receive it!

So True!

A bee is never as busy as it seems ... it's just that it can't buzz any slower.

Kim Hubbard

Hilarity at the beach!

My mother & me at the beach ... typical of our summers back then!  I'm not sure what was so funny to me ... there's no telling!

Flour for cakes

I'm having a party!

My mother sent out these little invitation cards for one of my birthday parties back in the mid 1960s. That was long before children's birthday parties had "themes".  We just had cake, ice cream, games, balloons and lots of fun as I remember it.  Who needed a theme?  Anyway, I love the little red riding hood design!

At Cape Hatteras

My mother & me at Cape Hatteras in the early 1960s

Tips from Grandma's Recipe Box

Magic Motion

This birthday card from the 1960s has a little hologram badge on it that the birthday girl is instructed to wear proudly on her blouse.  I never took it off the card but still enjoy moving the card about to see the motion.  There's a little accidental ink streak on her nose ... it's not a nose clip!  This card was sent with love & kisses by Uncle Paul & Aunt Marion.

Ahhhhhhhhhh Summertime!

My Dad at the beach in the 1960s.  He tanned easily and never seemed to burn!  I don't remember him having a beard then but this may be after a few days of camping and no shaving!

Clover

Big and lovable Clover ... Gracie's sister & constant companion ... or partner in crime?  Either way, we love her very much!

Many people have granddaughters ...

This sweet design is accompanied by the sentiment "Many people have granddaughters, but there are very few who could ever hold a candle to a granddaughter as dear as you!" .  My grandmother signed it "Love - Your old grandma".  I find that very amusing these days as I realize that when she signed that card, she probably wasn't much older than I am now!!  Yikes!!

Mystery Beauty

This beauty began blooming this weekend and it's so lovely!  I have no idea what it is ... just one of many bulbs planted here and there.

For Baby

These two tiny cards from 1960 were tucked inside gifts given to my mother at the baby shower.  They're so little and I love the designs!

Pie Crust

This yellowed and aged copy of my grandmother's pie crust recipe is of another era.  I've never made a pie crust from scratch and have only ever bought refrigerated crusts at the grocery store on the rare occasions that I actually bake a pie.  I'm sure there's a world of difference taste and texture wise.

Cookie Saver

Another tip from Grandma's recipe box ...

A Baby Shower!

My mother saved the 1960 baby shower invitation in her honor.  It was held at a neighbor's house on June 29th, 1960 at 8:00 PM and has an RSVP phone number.  I love that the phone number given is in the old style with the first numbers referred to as a word .. as in this case "Regent" for 73 ... remember those days??

How ships are launched!

Hickory - Dickory - Dock

This sweet Gibson card was sent by my grandmother in the early 1960s.  The clock hand moves so it can be set for the age of the recipient.  I spun that thing around so much there's no telling what it was originally set at!  She signed it "love to my baby" so I must have been quite young.

Happy 4th of July!!

Cookouts

These photos remind me so much of the endless cookouts we had when I was a child.  It seemed like every weekend we had hamburgers or steak on the little patio grill.  My father would lay in the lawn chair outside reading the newspaper or a sporting magazine and listen to the baseball games on the radio.  After a while, my mother would lean out the door and tell him to put a shirt on and start the grill!!  It was the same routine ... over and over ... ahhhh memories!

I'm thinking about you!

This greeting card was sent to me in 1980 by a high school friend whom I long ago lost touch with.  She was attending college in Ohio in 1980 and I was in college in Virginia but we stayed in touch for probably about 8 years after that. In today's world of emails and computer sites, it's fun to remember back on how a letter or greeting card was the only way aside from long distance telephone calls to stay in touch.

Grandmother's Oatmeal Prune Cookies

Something only a grandmother would find appealing ...

Because it's your birthday

This little french elephant was on "A Sunshine Card" sent in the 1960s by our family friend, Minnie.  She lived the next block over and I used to love to visit with her.  Sunshine Cards is a Canadian company and is still in business.  See here: http://sunshinegreetingcards.com/

A Little Piece of Quiet

This Mary Engelbreit print reflects my perfect weekend ... ahhhhhh ... peace and quiet & R&R!

Pound for Pound

From Grandma's recipe box and snipped from the August 1992 issue of Good Housekeeping:

Howdy Do! 3 Year Old

"Spotty the Leopard is as happy as can be -- He gets to bring this birthday wish to you because you're three!  Have fun!  Grandpa & Mildred"

Adorable!

Household hints from Manly Maids

This little clipping was in my grandmother's recipe file ... I wonder which tip caught her eye?  The one about the car wax is kinda interesting!

Happy Birthday, 2 Year Old

I love the artwork of these older cards!  This is another Miller Greeting card from our next door neighbors in 1962.  I haven't bought a birthday card for a child in ages but I'm sure they're still adorable!

Happy Valentine's Day

This isn't very seasonal but it made me laugh when I saw it again.  Back in the 1980s, I worked in an office with a woman who had a great sense of fun and humor.  On Valentine's Day, she had come to work early and randomly put Valentine's on everyone's desk ... all from a famous person.  Mine was from Paul Newman ... what a great start to the day!

For a Lovely Granddaughter

This is such a girl card!  It's almost as pretty on the back as it is on the front, complete with glitter!  Norcross is the card brand and I still see them occasionally but not as often as I used to years ago.  The drawing and the colors are as appealing to me now as it was when I first received the card back in the early to mid 1960s.  It was sent from Grandpa & Mildred ... it's a beaut!
